Maresme Forum

Barcelona:

The Forum-

A small group of us went on a walk to the Forum, an area at the east of Barcelona. The Forum is a strange looking building, dark blue in colour. In England it would look very out of place with our gloomy weather, but in Barcelona it fits amongst its surroundings well with the Mediterranian behind it. The Forum is used as an exhibition space and has caused great regeneration in the area. With a new seaside park and numerous new tower blocks being created. External surfaces are indented, reflective or textured. With certain areas within the Forum being made of mirror so that light refracts and reflects down into areas that would otherwise be dark.
The huge stretch of green space adjacent to the Mediterranian is full of textures, various changes in level, places to rest, play and swim. A previous warehouse is exposed and turned into a giant sculpture. Whilst there is a giant abstracted structure that takes it's role as a focal point and viewing platform. Although it is a very colourful place i feel that it has been created on too large a scale. Probably to cope with the number of visitors at the olympics in 1992. The architects seemed to have ignored the emphasis on quality and instead have just looked at scale and how many people they could possibly fit in this one space. Having said that there are some really nice sculptures here and good places to relax at leisure with good sculptural water features.
